#747 - Indonesia's Aviation Industry

ENGLISH

Last night, I watched an episode of
Air Crash Investigation (ACI) which is one of my most favorite documentary TV-program. This week, the episode was about Adam Air KI 574 which was lost in Makassar Strait at January 1st, 2007. I really like this episode since I felt some attachments when watching it. I think it's because the accident happened in Indonesia and I was aware of it. I even wrote an entry about it early 2007.

The cause of the accident has been published in Kompas several months ago. However, watching the episode was still so interesting for me.

One detail which was kinda intriguing was about the broken
IRS. Before that particular flight, there had been 48 complaints involving it in the last three months. Imagine it!! Forty Eight complaints and no action was taken! The "action" the airline took was only taking the instrument off, cleaning it from dust, then putting it back on place, and finally marking it as "DONE". WTF!! If that was really the real procedure, I guess everyone could have done it. The technicians shouldn't even have been trained, haha.

After that accident and some other accidents following it, the European Union has banned all Indonesian airlines from flying to Europe. This banning has gone for about two years now. Actually, for us, the customers, the banning is a 'good news'. Why? Because this banning is like a slap in the face of Indonesian aviation industry. With this prohibition, hopefully all Indonesian airlines try their best to increase their awareness of safety to the international standard. Beside, the government should regulate the industry even better and thighter. The safety should not be compromised, that's probably the basic thing to focus on.

Some endavours have been made during the pas few years. One of them was airline grading which I found a bit
'strange' and illogical during the early implementation. Ever since, the safety record went better and better with less fatal accidents.

The plan of European Union to
lift their ban on four Indonesian airlines, which are Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Topair, and Premiair, is hopefully a good sign. Still, it doesn't mean the safety record is perfect, since many other Indonesian airlines are still banned. The ban might not really affect them tho since I doubt they are about to operate flights to Europe. Probably only Garuda Indonesia which is interested in resuming her flight there soon. However, still, hopefully the ban will 'whip' all Indonesian airlines to raise their safety records and the government to regulate the aviation industry a lot better.

Anyway, a bit OOT. I really like Garuda Indonesia's new livery (picture below). This livery will be used an all her new aircrafts.

::: Adam Air's PK-KKW Boeing 737-400. This was the aircraft which was crashed in the accident.

::: Garuda Indonesia's Airbus A 330-243 reg code PK-GPJ in new livery.

BAHASA INDONESIA

Semalam, aku menonton episode dari
Air Crash Investigation (ACI), yaitu sebuah acara dokumenter favoritku.
