#856 - Portugal Trip (Part 1)

ENGLISH

Trip to Portugal

The flight to Portugal takes a pretty long time, almost 3 hours. And up to the departure day, I had no idea that Portugal is in a different time zone with ALL other mainland-Europe countries. (and I think this is ridiculous). Portugal is in GMT+0 which means that it is 1 hour behind the time in the Netherlands. This led me to falsely calculate at what time I should arrive at Schiphol Airport. What I knew for sure were that it would be a 3-hour flight and the flight was scheduled to arrive at 2.30 PM (and I didn't really pay attention at the departure time in the ticket because with the assumption that Portugal was in the same time-zone, these two datas were enough to deduce the departure time. Unfortunately, the assumption was wrong). From these datas, I deduced that the departure time would be around 11.30 AM. And because of the time difference, the REAL departure time was 12.30 PM!! And it made me arrive at Schiphol Airport way too early, hahaha. Lucky there was a Panorama Terrace in Schiphol so that I could kill my time there before checking-in.

Anyway, I caught TAP Portugal for this trip. TAP Portugal is Portugal's flag carrier and this is one reason why I decided to go to Portugal just three weeks prior to departure. For a national airline with a full-service concept, the offered ticket-price was kinda not expensive, adding the fact that it was already 3 weeks prior to departure and it would be a 3-hour flight. That is why I found the price of 170 euro vv nett was okay for me. Btw, the flight was comfortable. The aircrafts were Airbus A320-214 (reg code CS-TNP in the flight to Lisbon and CS-TNH in the flight back to Amsterdam) with a pretty roomy seat-pitch. The complimentary meal was also good: one meat sandwich (which was so tasty) and one peanut-chocolate cupcake, and drinks (plus hot tea and coffee). The landing in Lisbon Portela Airport was also perfectly smooth. O yea, this airport was also located in the city of Lisbon. So, before landing, we could see the city of Lisbon from above (if we sat in the window seat and not above the wings :D).

The first pleasant impression about Portugal was that: people in Portugal were "normal-sized" (read: I felt TALL there :D). Well, with height of 180 cm, I am just average in the Netherlands (many people here are 190-ish cm in height, even many people are around 2 meter, and they are not only boys, some girls are also very tall). While in Portugal, most people were shorter than me. The point is, I felt alive! LOL

The other pleasant impression surfaced because I think I am (getting) used to with life in the Netherlands: in Portugal, it is SHINY all day!! In Portugal, the "worst" weather was cloudy. In the Netherlands, the "best" one is shiny with cloud and that is rare to happen. Plus, during my trip to Portugal, there was a hailstorm in Delft!! Wow, whatta timing to have a trip (while in Delft, I have never experienced hailstorm)!!

In Portugal, I went to two biggest cities in Portugal, Lisbon (the capital city) and Porto (the second biggest city, about 300 km north of Lisbon). I stayed in Porto for the first three days, then I stayed in Lisbon for the rest of the trip. That was why just after landing at Lisbon, I directly went to a railway station to go to Porto. The nearest railway station was Oriente Station. To get there, we could catch a shuttle-bus by paying 3.5 euro per pax. After using this ticket, we'd better KEEP it because we could get a 25% discount on a sightseeing bus tour in Lisbon AND we could use it to use several facilites in Lisbon for FREE and it could be used several times (i.e the funicular which was a really cool way of transport because funicular was a trem whose route was to climb a steep hill (so we needed not to climb it up on foot and it was for free, LOL). Without this ticket, per person should pay 1.45 euro one way). Back to topic, the train that I caught was a fast train with 28.5 euro ticket on the second class. Actually there was a slower train with a bit cheaper ticket (20 euro) but at that time the schedule wasn't friendly enough for me. The distance of 300 km (almost the same with the distance from Jogja to Surabaya) was conquered in just 2 hours and 44 mins with only three short stops (at Coimbra, Aveiro, and Vila Nova de Gaia) and the maximum speed reached 222 km/hr! Portugal, which is not as modern as the Netherlands, already has a fast train! When will Indonesia have one? hahaha... . To be fair, Portugal can do this because the rail track in Portugal is wider than rail track in Indonesia. Thus, allowing train to move much faster.

Porto

I think, there are three places that have to be visited if we go to Porto. They are:

(1) Ribeira

Ribeira is the oldest part of Porto and it is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. There are many ancient buildings in this area, and one of the most beautiful is the Oporto Cathedral (Sé do Porto). If you go to this cathedral, you should also enter the Gothic cloisters just in the same complex. To enter this cloisters, I had to pay 3 euro (but because I had student card, I only had to pay 2 euro, not bad). The street in this area is also uphill because it is by the bank of the river. In the evening, in the side of Douro River, there were many restaurants and cafes.

(2) Ponte do Luis

Maybe this bridge is actually also in the "area" of Ribiera. But I deliberately separate it here because I think this bridge is actually the "landmark" of Porto. There are two roads in this bridge. The upper road is for metro and pedestrian, and the lower road is for car/bike/motorbike/bus and pedestrian. This bridge connects Porto, which is in the northern bank of Douro river, and Vila Nova de Gaia, which is in the south side of the river.

(3) Vila Nova de Gaia

What's so special about this town was not the place, nor the buildings there, nor the food, but wine. In this town, there are several wineries which produce Porto typical wine, which is widely known as "Port Wine". The interesting thing is that these wineries conduct free tour for tourists to go around the factory and the storages (with all the wine barrels), plus a tour-guide who explains the process of producing Port Wine (and also the history). The tours are conducted in English and Portuguese, just pick which one you want :D. The most fun part of the tour is the end (unless you are really interested in knowing the process of wine-producing and all kind of them which actually can be read online, lol) where the wineries give us their wine for free to taste! Of course how much wine they give us is also limited. One winery gave us 1 glass, the other one gave us 2 glasses with 2 different wines (usually 1 white and 1 red) and the type of free wine they gave us was also determined by them (for sure they wouldn't give us their 400 euro wine per bottle for free). Just like Porto, this town is also hilly, so be ready to have aching legs after getting around the town.

To get around Porto, the best way is by public transportation. To get on a public transport, we can buy a daily pass in the metro station. A daily pass is way cheaper as we only need to pay 3.95 euro for ALL access to all kind of public transportation (excluding taxi) for 24 hours counted after the first time the pass is used (NOT from the time we buy). This daily pass also covers the funicular ride just below Ponte de Luis. Good, so we don't have to climb that high hill :D

In Porto, I also took a 1 hour boat tour around the Douro river. It was kinda nice, and it cost me 10 euro. I think it was worthed but unfortunately at that time I had an incident which kinda diminished the fun of it. Apparently, some time before, I stepped on dog's poo (and I didn't realize it). After sitting cozily on the boat, I realized that I had incidently touched the poo (because I was touching my shoes) and also dirtied my jeans (damn!). I immediately walked to the boat's washroom and washed my shoes, hands, and jeans (but my jeans were still dirty that I had to have it laundried the next day). Maybe I wasted like 10 minutes of my tour on that boat because of this silly incident. Anyway, the tour was nice. We could see and enjoy the city from the boat :-)

For cuisine, there is one typical Portonese menu, Tripas à moda do Porto. This menu is made from beef stomach with white bean which cooked as a soup. While ordering, the waiter warned me that this menu was made from eccentric and unusual ingredient. Well, already making all the way to Porto, at least I must try it (and praying that it would be good so that I wouldn't waste that 7.5 euro I spent on it :D). The menu then came out. Well, for Indonesian, I think what was in there were not really "strange", as it was babat, liver, ampela, intestine, dll. But indeed, it tasted kinda weird because it was a "different" cooking, hehe.

Well, because this entry has already been kinda long, I think it is better for me to stop here. Wait for the next part of it :D

Intinya, I feel alive! LOL

. To be fair, ini mampu dilakukan Portugal karena rel kereta di Portugal lebih lebar daripada di Indonesia, sehingga memungkinkan kereta untuk melaju lebih cepat.

Porto

(2) Ponte do Luis
